Ceramic double basin looks good, is easy to keep clean, but doesn't offer quite enough space for toiletries.

The design of the bedrooms is particularly effective in the bathrooms, where the choice of simple white sanitary ware and white tiles creates clean spacious areas without feeling downmarket at all. Use of large tiles helps this, as does careful selection of grout colour, fittings and well-positioned lighting. There has been an experiment to introduce a glass walled bathroom in another of the bedrooms, but to my eye this adds nothing to the design solutions in the more traditional construction. Suites have separate toilets with their own wash hand basins, but retain the same simplicity of design approach that is the hall mark of a confident and sophisticated designer. Power showers are standard, with unfussy ceramic wash stands adding to the feel of cleanliness and efficiency. Nor does the three star status diminish the stock of toiletries in the bathroom, which are again laid out in a simple but effective manner that is attractive to the arriving guest.

Simplicity is something designers find difficult to achieve effectively. Here the clean finishes in both bathroom and bedroom create a simple contemporary feel that works well. Variations include end room with more views and different desk. Rollover to see glass bathroom, perhaps less satisfactory than normal construction

The bedrooms are a good size, and the beds are fitted with duvets as standard. Generous desk areas enable work to be carried out on a laptop comfortably, and there are the now standard internet links, although I am told that the group is looking at wireless internet access as a future development. The balance of the rooms is right, and again as unfussy as the bathroom, whilst being efficiently designed.

In choice of fabrics the designer is perhaps less sure footed than elsewhere, and maybe a different material would be better on the beheads, where marking is already evident, but the furniture is comfortable and functional as it should be at this level. The straightforwardness of the design should make maintenance simple, although the use of separate black-out curtain instead of incorporating blackout linings into the standard curtain construction is obviously causing problems for housekeeping.

This landmark hotel is accessible and has easy parking. The tower looks suprisingly slim, and the company graphics look good on this building. Conference and meetings rooms cater to the business market, but across the road from the hotel a new conference centre has just opened for business, and the commercial future of both would seem set fair.

New banqueting and private dining rooms have been formed on the top floor alongside the casino, with spectacular views across the city. These areas are used for private dining and other functions. Whilst I was there they were hosting a dinner for German and Argentinian generals - when asked whether an Englishman should be worried by this, the (Argentinian) general manager grinned and said "of course..."
