Bedside unit empahsises materials rather than style, as does (click the image to see) the room's desk

Guest lounge is comfortable and typically English with magazines, books and games for rainy days. Pictures show the hotel reconstruction stage by stage

This is not a metropolitan hotel, but sits easily in its surroundings, the use of natural materials and the locally sourced food ingredients resonating with the location in much the same way a 'W' does with its urban environment (see W Union Square as an example of urban chic in contrast with this English country chic).
As with any updating of an old building the bedrooms are all different and have their own character. Some have very large bathrooms others have the roll top bath in the room with views from the windows. None will disappoint and after less than a year the hotel is already beginning to experience the phenomenon of regular visitors specifying which room they want.

The refit of the hotel has used local craftsmen and materials and the attention to detail has been ferocious. Quality is the key note (except perhaps in the choice of skirting profile, which makes the skirting too much like planks to my taste) with wood block floors or new oak planks throughout. The replanning has added balconies to most rooms large enough for sun loungers and most are not overlooked. There is a large garden and pool area which with the Forest makes this a good centre for an English holiday.
