Marriott Courtyard, August 2009

Unusually for a Courtyard, but again a part of the architectural inheritance, are the expansive meeting spaces, the main one of which is the Empire Ballroom opening off the Lobby. Beautifully detailed deep plaster ceilings and crystal chandeliers give this hotel a high quality space suitable for weddings etc, as well as good meeting spaces. Rarely do modern buildings produce such elaborate decorative plasterwork, and this is a beautiful example of the genre.

On the floor above are a number of dividable rooms which can double as breakout spaces or meeting rooms in their own right. There is also a gem of an oval room, panelled and with a fireplace looking like a high quality private Club room. This provision is unusual in an hotel at this market point.

Corridors and lift lobbies vary widely in size, some big enough to contain computer workstations, libraries, lounging areas and large screen televisions. All have received individual attention from the designers and the result is in keeping with the period of the building - quirky and stylish.Computer workstations have printers connected and the internet access is free, with free Wi-Fi implemented in all the bedrooms too.

The availability and breadth of meeting rooms available mark this hotel out as a business hotel, and its separate conference Kitchen allows it to do banquets and weddings as well as the day to day run of large and small business meetings. All of which raises the question of why Marriott don’t acquire the lease, or buy, the adjacent restaurant and nightclub which would enable them to offer a full meal service and also remove the noise nuisance that causes such complaints.

On the opposite side of the entrance and also with a door off the reception lobby is a small pub/bar. Quite frankly this hotel could easily become a better boutique four star than other Marriott offerings in the city.
